Canon EOS 5D Review

The new Canon EOS 5D Digital Camera is aimed to slot in between the EOS 20D and the EOS-1D professional digital SLR’s, an important difference when compared to the later is that the EOS 5D doesn’t have any environmental seals. The 5D’s 35.8mm x 23.9mm 12.8 megapixel single-plate CMOS sensor, coupled with the application of Canon’s EF mount, enables full utilization of all Canon EF autofocus lenses with full preservation of their original optical perspectives. While Canon doesn’t specifically refer to the EOS 5D as a ‘professional’ digital SLR it will have obvious appeal to professionals who want a high quality digital SLR in a body lighter than the EOS-1D.

The EOS-5D is almost a perfect fit between the EOS-20D and EOS-1Ds Mk II, most notably in terms of resolution, size, battery life, and price. And speaking of price, yes, at $3299 for the body the 5D is expensive, but it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than the other full-frame camera out there, the $7200 EOS-1Ds Mk II. At the same time, it’s more the double the price of the very capable EOS-20D. So what do you get with those extra dollars?

Camera performance is first-rate. The camera starts up instanstly, focuses quickly (depending on your lens, of course), and takes pictures without noticeable lag. You can keep snapping until the buffer fills up, which takes quite a while, especially with a high speed memory card. The camera’s continuous snapping mode also impressed, with the abilty to take 100 JPEG or 18 RAW images in a row at 3 frames/second (which is actually slower than on the 20D). Battery life on the 5D was also very good.
