Maybe you already are aware of it, but even when lenses are used manually on the D40, the focus sensor is active, so a little indicator light in the viewfinder will light when you're focused. I know a lot of people consider that worthless, but I'm used to focusing manually with the film SLR I had, so it's no biggie for me. It doesn't take a split-image or matte viewfinder screen to get good, accurate focusing.

I've had the D40 about five days now, and I personally think it's GREAT! It's my first DSLR, and I have no legacy lenses to worry about. I find the kit lens to be a very good addition to the small, light body. Maybe some day I'll spring for an additional lens, but for right now I'm happy as a pig in mud.

Not only is the AF50mm prime compromised but my old Af180mm has met it s match and will not be so much fun to use on the D40. Perhaps there will be some new AFS lenses on the way.
